Doni Zasloff has been immersed in Jewish life and music since childhood. She attended Jewish day schools, followed by Brandeis University and NYU, where she earned a degree in Educational Theatre. Pursuing a career in children’s media and marketing, Doni was creative director for an award winning, pioneering children’s media company for more than seven years.
When Doni’s children’s preschool asked her to take a position as music teacher in early 2007, she readily agreed. The creative juices started flowing, as Doni perceived a golden opportunity to share her love of Jewish culture with kids in a way to which they could easily relate. Dipping into the reservoir of her past experiences, she began writing and recording her own songs. Doni’s first album, I Love Herring (& Other Fish Shticks for Kids), was released to immediate acclaim in 2008. A 4-song EP for Chanukah, I Love Chanukah!, and an EP for Purim, I Love Purim!, followed. 2009 brought a second full-length album, Chanukah Fever, followed by the Parents’ Choice® winning albums Shabbat Shaboom in 2011, Emunah in 2012,
What else was Mama Doni up to? Forming a band and taking the show on the road, of course. There was instant demand for Doni’s brand of “funky music with a Jewish twist,” and, in short order, she was performing at JCCs and temples throughout the country, presenting kiddie rock with a beat and a lyrical groove that even got the grown-ups dancing. The band won the Simcha Award for “Inspiring Joy Through Music” in competition with more than 100 bands from 15 different countries at the 2008 International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam.
With tours sponsored by Streit’s Matzo for the past 4 years, Doni’s smiling visage has been seen each year on more than a million matzo boxes, nationwide. TV appearances on FOX-5’s Good Day New York, NBC’s Today in New York, Shalom TV, and E Channel’s The Soup. All the while, Doni’s eclectic repertoire was expanding, and she even found time to write a cookbook, Get Cooking! A Jewish American Family Cookbook & Rockin’ Mama Doni Celebration, published by Behrman House in 2012. They released an hour-long DVD, Mama Doni's Jewish Holiday Party and The Acoustic Jewish Holiday Collection CD, which recevied their third Parents’ Choice® Award. They also released their first audio book entitled, Mama Doni's Bible Stories Volume 1 and 2 with Dreamscape Media; Volume 1 released in 2014, and Volume 2 is being released Chanukah 2015.
