(May 24, 2010) - Montclair, New Jersey based musician, mother, and yiddishe rock star Doni Zasloff Thomas AKA, Mama Doni, has a passion for bagels, and has declared MAY 30th to be National Bagel Day! In order to pay tribute to the classic coffee companion and commemorate this exciting new holiday, MAMA DONI is releasing a brand-new free music video for her family-friendly reggaeton song, "Bagel-Time". The video features all generations coming together to celebrate this breakfast bonanza and dance the "bagel bounce", from 3-month-old Shepard to 93-year-old Gertrude. She hopes this video will “SPREAD” bagel appreciation!
In collaboration with her favorite local bagel shop, Beyond the Bagel, at 219 Bellevue Ave Montclair, NJ, Mama Doni created the Bagel-Time Contest, which you can enter at www.mamadoni.com or at Beyond the Bagel. The three lucky winners will receive a Mama Doni CD, T-Shirt, a dozen bagels and a pound of cream cheese, and a chance to be in Mama Doni’s next music video. (No purchase is required to win. This contest is open to residents of the U.S. and Canada.) Winner will be announced on May 30th, National Bagel Day, on MamaDoni.com and at the bagel shop. The owners of Beyond the Bagel are especially excited about this well-needed holiday and they themselves (and their bagels) are featured in Mama Doni’s new music video.
Since their creation in Vienna, Austria in 1683, bagels have migrated around the world, first arriving in America with Jewish Austrian immigrants in the early part of the century. Their satisfying texture and flavor helped them rise to popularity in the 1920's, and the first pre-packaged bagels were introduced in the 1950's. Now, bagels are synonymous with breakfast: Americans spent well over $430,000,000 on fresh supermarket bagels alone in 2008, and they are the breakfast food of choice for millions around the world.
So, what inspired Mama Doni to write about bagels and declare a holiday in their honor? "I've just always loved bagels!" She said. "Plus, I thought it would be a fun way to bring people together to appreciate one of the most famous and delicious Jewish foods that everyone loves!”
Mama Doni is full of ideas for how to celebrate National Bagel Day, and you can find many of them on her website, www.MamaDoni.com. From “Make Your Own Bagel Glasses”,”Bagel Bocce", to making bagel pizza, there are plenty of ways to show appreciation for the world’s only boiled bread product. But, according to Mama Doni, the most important thing to do on National Bagel Day is “call your bubbie [grandmother] and tell her that you love her!”
Known for "Jewifying" every genre of music and bringing a hip sensibility and sophisticated humor to family music, Mama Doni has been performing around the world for the past year. She won the 2008 Simcha Award for "Inspiring Joy Through Music" at the International Jewish Music Festival Competition in Amsterdam, Holland. Recognized in The New York Times, New York Post, and many other media outlets, The Mama Doni Band appears nationwide, delighting people of all ages and backgrounds.
